Shows an average person's full visual field (i.e. peripheral vision)

Note the location of the normal “blind spot”, the point in the eye where the optic nerve is located.

Since there is no retinal tissue to receive light at this point, we all have a normal blind spot in each eye.

Abnormal

In this figure there is an elongation of the blind spot in a classic glaucoma visual field loss, known as a scotoma.

This individual’s high intraocular pressure damaged the tissue of the optic nerve resulting in a loss of peripheral vision. Since this loss is irreversible, early detection with visual field testing along with the GDX is of great importance.
